The purpose of the Satellite Child Care Start-Up Grant (SCSG) is to support licensed child care centres to respond to changing community and business needs due to COVID 19. The SCSG will support moving existing spaces to an alternate location to reach their regular licensed capacity or create new spaces in satellite sites located in community and/or home settings. The existing licensed child care centre will assume responsibility for the oversight of the satellite programs.
The satellite grant funding stream will help to address various issues related to COVID-19 efforts, including: physical distancing requirements, public health requirements (as some existing facilities may be struggling to reach full capacity under the current public health restrictions) and to meet families’ preferences for smaller settings.
SCSG funding may be used to help offset the wages of employees directly involved in the operation and/or administration of child care services, to purchase equipment required for those services, or to support renovations required to ensure dedicated spaces meet regulatory and/or licensing requirements. Marketing and promotional activities are not eligible.
The amount of grant funding received depends on the business plan submitted with a SCSG application. Eligible applicants developing new child care services to enable the move of existing child care spaces (maximizing availability of spaces), or creating new spaces, will receive a one-time grant of $6,250 per full-time child care space as per their business plan to a maximum of $100K per satellite site, subject to the availability of government funding. Priority may be given to child care centres who cannot reach full capacity at their existing location due to public health restrictions.
