The Alert Ready System is a Federal/Provincial/Territorial initiative that provides emergency management organizations throughout Canada with a standard alerting capability to warn the public of imminent or unfolding hazards to life. The system is comprised of many partners, including the broadcast industry, wireless service providers and Pelmorex who collects and disseminates the emergency alerts. In order for emergency alerts to be received on a wireless device, the device must be:
If a device does not meet all three conditions at the time the emergency alert is issued, the device will not be able to receive the emergency alert.
In order to receive an emergency alert, your wireless device needs to be turned on and connected to a LTE cellular network at the time the emergency alert is issued. Therefore a compatible wireless device that is turned off will not display an emergency alert. If the emergency alert is still active when the wireless device is powered back on, and the user is still in the alerting area, the wireless device will then display the alert.
A compatible wireless device that is set to silent and is connected to a LTE cellular network at the time the emergency alert is issued will display an emergency alert, but you might not hear the emergency alert sound. The emergency alert sound will usually play at the current volume setting on the wireless device. Therefore, if your wireless device is set to silent, no sound will accompany the emergency alert message. However, this behavior can differ depending on your wireless device and in some instances the alert sound may override your user settings. You can also review the alert in your notifications in your device.
For Your Awareness:You cannot opt out of receiving emergency alerts. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has mandated that all compatible wireless devices receive all relevant alerts. There is no sign-up required. Emergency alerts will be automatically sent through broadcast channels, and to compatible wireless devices. Not all Canadians will receive emergency alerts on their wireless devices.
